random curiosity...
What is the fanfic sub-genre that baffles you the most, like a plot device or kink or whatever, that you would have never guessed even existed as a button for others, yet there is a bunch of fic for it (or at least more than a few, I don't mean really rare bizarreness like Fawkes/Squid fanfic or whatever).

I think for me it is fanfic turning canonically unrelated characters into family in order to then have an incest fic rather like regular slash (I haven't just seen this happening with het ships, but I guess it might as well). It's not that common but for example on [info]painless_j's Snape/Harry Incest thematic list are a dozen stories or so, and I've seen it with other characters as well.

Oh, it's MPREG. I mean, it's all yadda yadda now, but when I first got into slash I was like, "you have *got* to be kidding."

I understand (and even really like) baby stories, weird incubator accidents, adoption scenarios, genderswap, whatever -- but the stories where the a man actually gets pregnant in his male body were ... strange ... to me, in a way that "not my kink" just doesn't even cover. And that remains to this day.

But I will read the Severitus slash, because I have both an incest kink and a master/student kink, and I'm a whore for Snarry of any kind.... But I don't really prefer seeing those two kinks indulged together, and I think the Severitus scenario, while plausible, is terribly unfair to James and Lily. So, I read it, but I don't chase it down, if that makes sense.

When I first came into HP I was surprised even that Severitus was a whole genre, but I get the appeal, because I like Snape-as-mentor fic.

I was a bit "huh?" about MPREG, but I found MPREG fanfic well after that Schwarzenegger movie, so the idea as such didn't seen that out there to me.

Well, wing-fic is a great big bwuh? to me. I have no idea where it comes from.

I think it comes from anime. Manga artists will often put pictures in their artbooks of the characters just randomly having wings because it's pretty. :)

I think crossdressing may be similar in that from my impressions it's more popular with art than with fic.

It seemed like there was quite a lot of it in Smallville, but that was just because MR had several crossdressing roles under his belt and so people had the visuals all there to work with already. *G*

Yeah, what Livia said, it can be just pretty. I mean, wingfic I get on the same level that I get animal transformations and genderswap and such. It's just fun, and also flying! is just always cool.

I think I'm missing the "wings, pretty!" switch. Then again, animal transformation is also wholey dependent on the author in question, whereas genderswap? I'm pretty much always willing to give a whirl.

Well, FWIW, looking at your icon, it occurs to me that I'm similarly baffled by centaur!fic. I have read a couple that I liked, but in general horses don't really appeal that much to me.

Honestly enough, me too! I mean, the fact that it generally turns slashy only makes my brain recoil in horror.

Actually I can get into bestiality fic in general just fine (commonly in my fandoms so far it's been panthers, dogs and wolves mostly, because of the spirit guide thing in TS and the animagus thing in HP), but not with horses...

Mpreg. Mpreg-mpreg-mpreg!!!

Because males do not get pregnant. That's what makes them male.

Unless they are male seahorses... *g*

There isn't much slash about male seehorses, is there?

(I hope.)

Well, penguins, dolphins and turtles certainly seem more popular, at least on the SGA side of animal transformation slash...

I don't know if this counts as a sub-genre, or if it's just plain badfic:

AUs where the characters share nothing but their appearance and/or name with their canon counterparts.

That's just badfic I think. I meant fanfic which existence leaves you baffled more thoroughly than just the "it's not my kink *shrug*" way. For example while crossdressing is not my thing, I get why people like it. Same with "regular" incest fic, I get that the incest taboo/dynamic is a kink, but that people are attracted first to a non-incest pairing, but then change the dynamic into incest to make it better for them seems just very odd to me, and I can't quite follow anymore, even theoretically.

Deliberate badfic.

When people go "You know what would be really bad? Sesame Street porn!" or something like that and go out and write it. I don't think it's really that funny when done on purpose.

Meeep! Now you put bad images in my head. I'm still traumatized by the Care Bear porn from yuletide, and unlike Sesame Street I didn't even like Care Bears all that much. I really prefer my Ernie/Bert slash non-graphic...

But yeah, I find that odd also.

The all-time, strangest, most shocking genre i've ever seen (never mind read) has to be an O'Neill/Thor(SG-1) fic my friend wrote. She got some "you are a bad, bad person" comments for that one though.

It just confuses me because... thor doesn't even have genitalia! How could it happen?!? Its physically impossible (like MPreg but I can accept that).

Well, I guess he could have sexual feelings without genitalia. I mean, paralyzed people can still have sex too, even if it's different. So I have no problem for sex with an alien to be not focused on gentials, or with scenarios of Thor getting off on doing stuff with O'Neill.
