fanart, John Sheppard Halloween '75
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard
Media used: pencil drawing
Rating/warnings: G, none
Notes/comments: I did this for the [info]paintedspires Halloween challenge. While it isn't Halloween anymore where I am, it still is elsewhere, so I hope this still counts as October posting too...

Maybe I've just watched the Peanuts Halloween special too often, but I couldn't help but think that at some point John must have dressed up as WW I Flying Ace for Halloween just like Snoopy. So here's a pencil sketch of John Sheppard on Halloween 1975, as he's going trick-or-treating.

Too cute! And of course John dressed up as a flying ace - just as Rodney likely dressed up as an obscure, preeminent scientist and then wondered why noone could guess who he was dressed as ;)

Thanks! I suspect that Sheppard was cute as a kid and that it probably helped him to get away with all kinds of things...

This is really astoundingly cute.

Are there Halloween/Samhain/All Hallows customs in your part of the world, BTW?

Thanks!

And not for Halloween as such (though they try to market it of course), but around this time of year small children usually walk around in groups with paper lanterns they make, singing seasonal songs and such. It's very exiting because you are allowed to light your lantern and handle fire for the first time (obviously with adult supervision, but still it's a big deal when you are three or four and can carry a lit lantern around, though some parents use electric lights these days too).

Traditionally in Northern Germany this is done on the 10th November, kind of like the St.Martin singing they do on 11th(?) I think in the Catholic areas, but it has since spread out some. I think its orgins are that in old times seasonal farm workers were let go on that date, so they were without income for the winter, so they wandered from house to house asking for food donations and such and the children helped with that too. Or something like that. Later that transformed into more symbolic sweets and such, but im my city children don't usually do the part that is asking for sweets, that is more a rural thing I think. Just the lantern and the singing is done here, afaik.

Thanks! And yeah, it's really kind of an inevitable costume choice for him. And now I wonder whether once Star Wars was out he had gone as Han Solo or as Luke Skywalker...

The costume idea is perfect, but what I love the most? John's expression. He's so pleased with himself, it's adorable (and true!). :D
