5th-Mar-2009 11:45 pm - fanart, Diricawl
drawing
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: a diricawl
Media used: pencil, fine liner pen with waterproof indian ink, black tea, GIMP
Rating/warnings: G, none
Notes/comments: This is the third in my magical creatures series, a diricawl encyclopedia plate this time, showcasing their escape method. The crosshatching in this took me forever. Okay, a couple of hours, but it felt like forever. Also, after I had already drawn that predator cat, it occurred to me that HP canon says they come from Mauritius, so there wouldn't have been any cats. Oops. OTOH maybe some magical cat preyed on them, I mean, why would they have developed the vanishing thing otherwise? Without enemies they would really been like the dodo I think. Anyway: *handwave*

23rd-Nov-2008 09:05 pm - fanart, Red Cap
talent/enthusiasm
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: a red cap
Media used: pencil, fine liner pen with waterproof indian ink, black tea, GIMP
Rating/warnings: G, none
Notes/comments: Some time ago I drew a bowtruckle supposed to look like an excerpt from an old book about magical creatures from the HP universe. I wanted to do more in this style and did a poll which creature I ought to draw next. The red cap got two votes, all others either zero or one (it wasn't a popular poll, heh), so here it is. Admittedly my turn around time isn't exactly fast. I also have to give credit to [info]amelia_eve for suggesting a title for this imaginary work, because I couldn't come up with anything, and she commented with several options in the bowtruckle post.

24th-May-2008 11:45 am - which beast to draw next?
hmm...?
I want to expand the bowtruckle drawing I posted a couple of days ago into a series, because I like drawing creatures, and I think it would be fun to have something like multiple plates from this imaginary old encyclopedia from the HP universe, especially ones with slightly more obscure bests that you don't see that often featured in fanart. But I'm undecided which beast to tackle next, hence this poll to help me decide:

Poll #1193064 Fantastic Beasts
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 6

Which fantastic beast (from Harry Potter) should I draw next?

19th-May-2008 11:15 pm - fanart (kind of a WIP), Bowtruckle
talent/enthusiasm
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: a bowtruckle
Media used: pencil, fine liner pen with waterproof indian ink, black tea, GIMP
Rating/warnings: G, none
Notes/comments: The drawing is finished, however I hope there'll be better text eventually that would make it seem more like an excerpt from an old book about magical creatures from the HP universe. For now I've just added some text labeling it like a plate in an encyclopedia would be, so you have to imagine the suitable text going with it. Its style is supposed to reminiscent of early encyclopedias, like Diderot's from the 18th century with copperplate engravings of observed plants and animals. My attempt at this isn't very convincing because this is the first time I've done a b/w picture in ink with crosshatching since I think 9th? grade when we learned the technique in school, but considering that it is not so bad. I may do more HP beasts in this style eventually as part of this imaginary book too, but I haven't decided which yet.

navel-gazing
I'm not sure whether there's even any interest, because the painting itself got less comments than usual for my fanart posts, so I guess there will be ever fewer interested in the unfinished inbetween stages. But I already made the photographs after all, so I decided to go ahead with the art process post.

drawing
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: Severus Snape/Kingsley Shacklebolt
Rating/warnings: PG? (sexual kissing, but no nudity)
Media used: pencil, fine liner pen with waterproof indian ink, acrylic paint, a tiny bit of white conté chalk
Notes: This took a ridiculously long time to color (bricks! how I hate them...um, moving on now *g*), but it's finally finished. It's this Snape/Shacklebolt scene in the alley from Beth's In From the Cold:
"Severus loosened his grip on Kingsley's shoulders and slid his hands down Kingsley's arms. He stopped when he reached the ends of Kingsley's sleeves, encircled Kingsley's strong-boned wrists with his fingers, then pulled Kingsley's arms up over his head. Severus transferred his hold of Kingsley's right wrist so that both of Kingsley's hands were pinned against the brick wall by one of his own, then Severus slowly lowered his other hand until it came to rest on the top of Kingsley's head.

Severus ghosted his long, sensitive fingers over Kingsley's scalp, surprised by each tiny bump and dip in what seemed perfectly smooth from a distance. He slid his hand down along the side of Kingsley's head, and he could feel Kingsley lean into his palm while Severus traced along the edge of Kingsley's ear with his thumb, clicking his thumbnail softly against the small silver hoop that hung from the lobe. Severus leaned in and took the earring in his mouth, turning the hoop slowly with his tongue."

snape
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: Severus Snape/Kingsley Shacklebolt
Rating/warnings: PG? (sexual kissing, but no nudity)
Media used: only pencil so far
Notes: I've already illustrated the epilogue of this story a while back, but always wanted to draw this Snape/Shacklebolt scene in the alley. Now, with barely two years delay, I got around to it. The relevant bit from Beth's In From the Cold is:
"Severus loosened his grip on Kingsley's shoulders and slid his hands down Kingsley's arms. He stopped when he reached the ends of Kingsley's sleeves, encircled Kingsley's strong-boned wrists with his fingers, then pulled Kingsley's arms up over his head. Severus transferred his hold of Kingsley's right wrist so that both of Kingsley's hands were pinned against the brick wall by one of his own, then Severus slowly lowered his other hand until it came to rest on the top of Kingsley's head.

Severus leaned in and took the earring in his mouth, turning the hoop slowly with his tongue."

If anyone from newsletters or otherwise interested in linking should stumble upon this entry, I'd prefer it if only the finished version, which I'll hopefully post soonish, was advertised more widely, not these unfinished pencils.

5th-Jun-2006 08:05 pm - fanart, Ginny as requested by [info]dragovianknight
drawing
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: Ginny Weasley
Rating: G
Media used: Pencil drawing, colored in GIMP
Warnings: None
Notes: When I asked for character/emotion prompts to practice expressions, [info]dragovianknight asked for "Ginny Weasley, shocked." The irises aren't quite equal in size, which obviously looks weird, but by the time I actually noticed that, I was at a stage in the coloring already where I would have had to redo a lot of stuff *headdesk*, so considering that this is more a sketch than an elaborate drawing I decided to be lazy and just live with it. Also, I've never drawn Ginny, but I still hope it looks both like her and shocked, and fits what you wanted to see, [info]dragovianknight. As usual, all comments are welcome.

8th-Feb-2006 08:25 pm - fanart, illustration for [info]bethbethbeth's In From the Cold
drawing
I've finally finished the picture, but I'm not sure whether I really like the final color filter I applied. I put a soft light gradient layer over the whole thing, to make it warmer and a bit more radiant to give it more of a warm summer feel, but I'm not sure it worked. So after waffling back and forth for a while, I decided to post both versions, and let [info]bethbethbeth decide which one she likes better, which then will count as the final version. Voila, decision dumped onto someone else.... >;)

Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Severus Snape
Rating: G
Media used: pencil drawing, cleaned up and colored in GIMP
Warnings: None
Notes/comments: It's an illustration for the epilogue of [info]bethbethbeth's Snape/Kingsley story In From the Cold. Belatedly I noticed that I actually misread the sentence and it was Kingsley wearing that parrot shirt... *facepalm* Well, I really like the idea of Snape in that outfit anyway. maybe they sometimes share clothes, or something?

Also I'm aware both shadows and perspective don't hold up if you check them for their proper technical construction, I just hope it's not too cringeworthy for the casual viewer.

two fairly large pictures, each about 175K, the only difference being the final lightening filter... )
28th-Jan-2006 03:43 pm - fanart (still WIP), illustration for [info]bethbethbeth's In From the Cold
drawing
So, I've decided that I'm too lazy to start the drawing I mentioned yesterday all over again, and that I'm not embarrassed enough by its problems to not post the result of a few hours work (yeah, I know, it's kind of pathetic how long it takes me to produce one measly sketch). And anyway, maybe it'll be less noticeable once it's colored...

Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Severus Snape
Rating: G
Media used: pencil drawing (still to be cleaned up and colored)
Warnings: None
Notes/comments: Still a WIP, just pencils for now. It's an illustration for the epilogue of [info]betbethbeth's Snape/Kingsley story In From the Cold (which you should all read, it's really great and not at all crackfic as you might fear from the fact that my illustration shows Snape in the Caribbean, wearing a shirt with parrots...).

Title: Platypus!Harry fighting Voldemort
Characters: Harry (in platypus form), Voldemort
Rating: G
Media used: pencil drawing, inked and colored in GIMP
Challenge: Nimori's Animagus Challenge
Warnings: None.
Notes/comments: The scenario I imagined for this one was something along the lines that Harry got captured, lost his wand and now makes a desperate attempt to escape by surprising Voldie with his animagus form and tries to incapacitate him with the venom to get away, that's why he's trying to kick him... You can also look at the original pencil sketch.

22nd-Oct-2005 09:45 pm - fanart, sort of. also, new icon.
food
See, [info]bethbethbeth linked to the first [info]porkish_pixies challenge in her LJ, and though I hadn't joined the parody community when it was created, I was curious and followed the link. So I read that, and promptly felt compelled to do a HP doodle fitting with one of her example scenarios, which you can see in this post (Inflated!Snape, G-rated). Keep in mind that before this I have never done HP art, nor felt any real desire to do so. I suspect some sort of far distance electronic compulsion spell, it is the only explanation. It did however give me an opportunity to show off my new food icon, which I thought was only fitting for a [info]porkish_pixies post.
